What can I expect during the peel?
During the peel, tingling, itching, burning, and warmth may be felt, but diminish after 2-4 minutes. A fan may be used to minimize discomfort. How long will my skin peel? Skin will exfoliate and peel beginning on day 2 or 3 and last up to 5 days. On days 1-3, redness, dryness, stinging, itching, tightness, mild swelling, flaking and peeling are normal symptoms.

What is the aftercare like?
You will be given a kit to take home that contains topical creams and written instructions. You will cleanse skin the morning after the peel with gentle cleanser, then apply the second half of the Retinol Stimulating Cream and a thin layer of the Hydrating Crème. Hydrating Crème may be applied 3 or more times daily as needed. No other products, including makeup, may be used on the skin other than Gentle Cleanser and Hydrating Crème until skin is fully healed. You must avoid direct sun exposure for at least 7-10 days following the peel to best allow the skin to fully heal. However, if at any time sun exposure cannot be avoided, lightly apply a 50 SPF sunscreen for protection. Avoid strenuous exercise and sweating, electrolysis, waxing, depilatory creams, and laser hair removal until the skin is completely healed. Skin may appear darker while healing, which is normal. Never peel at skin that is flaking. Use scissors to clip hanging skin.

What is “preconditioning the skin”?
Patients must prep their skin at least 6 weeks prior (depending on severity of condition) with a ZO program for accelerated healing and enhanced results. The precondition protocol must include a brightening product, and daily application of Retinol concentrations at 0.5% or greater. (Note: For clients prone to hyperpigmentation, a daily hydroquinone product approach is strongly recommended prior to the 3 Step Peel in patients prone to hyperpigmentation.) Patients must discontinue the use of topical retinoids, and other products containing alpha and beta hydroxy acids, benzoyl peroxide, harsh scrubs, and potentially irritating products 3-4 days prior to peel. Avoid laser hair removal, electrolysis, waxing, threading, and use of depilatory creams for 5-7 days prior to peel. Patients with a history of cold sores must inform the provider prior to treatment. A pre-treatment prescription medication should be taken as a precautionary measure to eliminate the chances of developing cold sores after the peel. Gentlemen must shave the treatment area one day before (not day of) the scheduled treatment.
