Independence Day will have special meaning this year for Palmira Balsiene, medical receptionist

Independence Day will have special meaning this year for Palmira Balsiene, medical receptionist at Village Pointe Aesthetic Surgery | Dreams MedSpa. On Tuesday, July 3, Palmira took the Oath of Allegiance, the final step in the process of becoming a U.S. citizen.

Born in Alytus, Lithuania, Palmira was “lucky enough” to have won the Diversity Visa Lottery, more commonly known as the Green Card Lottery.

“Becoming a U.S. citizen opens the door to a lot of opportunities for me,” says Palmira. “My four-year-old son is American, so I thought his mom should be too.”

“If you haven’t heard of the Green Card Lottery, it is just as it sounds. It took me about two years to get all of my paperwork together for it, and I went to Poland to complete my required interview,” says Palmira. “In September 2000, my husband and I arrived in the United States and I came straight to Omaha.”

Palmira says she was shocked when she arrived because she expected to see a city the size of Chicago, Ill., but nonetheless, she enjoys Omaha, Neb. and has been here for 18 years now.

“Becoming a U.S. citizen opens the door to a lot of opportunities for me,” says Palmira. “My four-year-old son is American, so I thought his mom should be too.”

One such opportunity that Palmira is pursuing is nursing school in the fall.

“I am looking forward to extending my career,” says Palmira. “I have worked in the medical field for a long time now and I like helping people and our doctors. I see my future in the medical field.”

The staff at Village Pointe Aesthetic Surgery | Dreams MedSpa celebrated Palmira on Monday, complete with an American Flag tote full of goodies.
