The Benefits of Combining Breast Augmentation and Lift

In 2018, breast augmentations are still among the most popular plastic surgery procedures. Over a quarter million breast augmentation surgeries were performed last year, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. Many women are choosing to receive breast implants at the same time as a breast lift to further enhance the size and appearance of their breasts.

Commonly known as a breast lift, Mastopexy surgery raises and firms the breasts by removing excess skin and tightening the surrounding tissue to reshape and support the new breast contour. A breast lift is a great choice for women who desire to elevate the droopy (ptotic) breast and can rejuvenate your figure with a more youthful shape.

However, a breast lift alone may not give you the look you ultimately desire. Breast augmentation – or enhancement – is a surgical procedure to enlarge and enhance the size and shape of the breast with the use of implants. Options include the use of silicone, saline or cohesive gel implants. Along with a breast lift, your ideal body contour can often be achieved by combining the two procedures. Your surgeon will help you determine which options are best for you, your goals and your body type.

Who is a Good Candidate?

Many women are choosing to receive breast implants at the same time as a breast lift to further enhance the size and appearance of their breasts.

A complete exam and consultation with a skilled surgeon is crucial. Some factors to consider and further discuss with your doctor, include:

  • If you are over 40, have had multiple pregnancies and/or have breastfed
  • If you have battled obesity in the past
  • If you have poor skin quality, stretch marks, too much sagging skin, low-resting nipples, or there appears to be disengagement between the skin, gland, and chest wall, then a lift is best to achieve the best cosmetic outcome. While most women who fall into these categories are older, some young women do as well.
  • Heredity, aging and overall health are factors in your candidacy

Combination surgery is typically a good option if:

  • You are physically healthy and maintain a stable weight
  • You do not smoke
  • You have realistic expectations
  • You are doing the surgery for yourself, not anyone else

And, you have one or more of the following:

  • You are bothered by the feeling that your breasts sag, have lost shape and volume
  • Your breasts have a flatter, elongated shape or are pendulous
  • When unsupported, your nipples fall below the breast crease
  • Your nipples and areolas point downward
  • You have stretched skin and enlarged areolas
  • One breast is lower than the other

Unique Benefits of Combination Surgery

There are many reasons, both cosmetic and reconstructive, to combine these breast surgeries:

  • Combination of lift and augmentation is just as safe as single surgery (as cited by Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery)
  • There is less scarring and removal of skin
  • The implant helps fill out the breast and improves its overall appearance so that less lifting may be needed
  • Combining surgeries is less expensive than having both surgeries separately
  • Combining surgeries can reduce overall recovery time, downtime and hassle
  • According to the study cited by PRS, risk levels are similar whether procedures are done alone or combined. The study also revealed that most patients prefer to have just one surgical procedure wherever possible.

While combined lift and augmentation surgery has many benefits for the patient, it requires a skilled cosmetic surgeon. Lift and augmentation surgery requires extensive knowledge to complete correctly; otherwise, complications may arise during healing.

It is important to have a detailed discussion concerning incisions during your consultation in order to ensure the best outcome. Understanding the relationship between the skin, the breast glands, the muscles, implants and chest wall is critical.

Is the Combined Surgery Safe?

While any surgical procedure involves some risk, breast augmentation and lift is generally considered safe. Breast augmentation has been around for many decades and there have been numerous studies done documenting the safety of this procedure. All of the implants used at Village Pointe Aesthetic Surgery have been approved by the FDA and are considered safe.

“The procedures are very safe when performed by a trained and board-certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon,” says Perry Johnson, MD, chief of plastic and reconstructive surgery at Nebraska Medicine.

Dr. Johnson also offers the following tips:

  • Make sure the surgeon is affiliated with a hospital. Hospitals have strict standards
  • Ask to see before and after photos of prior procedures performed and talk to former patients to find their level of satisfaction
  • If you have underlying medical issues, get evaluated by your primary care physician first
